Dearing, GA

Dearing is a McDuffie County town on U.S. 78 and U.S. 278, eight miles southeast of Thomson and four miles west of Harlem. Augusta lies about 24 miles east. The place began as Lombardy, a railroad and logging settlement with a post office established in 1823. The name changed to Dearing in 1893 for William Dearing, a Georgia Railroad official, and the town received its charter in 1910. The 2020 census counted 529 residents.

Dearing's roads now carry the traffic that once gathered around the railroad, while tributaries of Headstall Creek drain south toward Brier Creek and the Savannah River. Town Council, the clerk's office, permits, bill payment, and emergency-service links handle the municipal side from Augusta Highway. The town's location keeps it close to Thomson's county services and Augusta's larger employment and shopping network, but Dearing remains a separate place with a railroad name, a logging beginning, and a small-town street pattern tucked into the Central Savannah River region.
