Deary, ID

Deary sits about 24 miles east of Moscow, right where the rolling hills of the Palouse meet northern Idaho's timber country. With a population of around 500, it offers a quiet, close-knit rural setting directly at the base of Potato Hill, which everyone in town calls Spud Hill. Daily life centers around a handful of local staples, including a grocery store, a hardware shop, the community library, and the local school campus, with miles of backcountry trails and forest roads waiting right outside town.

The community dates back to the late 1800s, when Black pioneers Joe and Lou Wells arrived from North Carolina and ran a popular lodging house for travelers moving through the woods. The townsite officially sprang up in the early 1900s around the Potlatch Lumber Company railroad line, taking its name from general manager William Deary. Today, Deary holds onto its rich logging and agricultural roots, offering newcomers a relaxed, small-town atmosphere with the amenities of Moscow just down the highway.
