Moscow and the University of Idaho have grown side by side since the town’s earliest days. Settled in the 1870s and briefly known as Hog Heaven and Paradise Valley, the community quickly established itself as a regional hub once the university was founded in 1889. Today, the campus borders right against downtown, blending academic energy with everyday town routines. You can step off the historic brick sidewalks of Main Street, past local bookshops and independent coffee spots, and find yourself on campus within a few minutes on foot.

With a population of around 26,000, Moscow offers the close-knit feel of a small town paired with the lively, educated vibe typical of a major university community. The housing landscape reflects that collegiate mix, featuring rental apartments close to campus alongside quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods filled with historic craftsman homes. Getting around town without a car is surprisingly easy. SMART Transit runs free bus routes connecting campus, Gritman Medical Center, local schools, and shopping centers. Cyclists and runners can jump on an extensive paved trail network, including the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail stretching over to Pullman and the Paradise Path winding across town. On Saturday mornings from May through October, downtown turns into the ultimate gathering spot for the Moscow Farmers Market. Spilling into Friendship Square, the market fills Main Street with regional produce, fresh pastries, handmade crafts, and live music.

Outdoor recreation and local arts keep the calendar full year-round. On the south edge of town, the 63-acre University of Idaho Arboretum offers peaceful walking paths through botanic gardens with sweeping views of the surrounding Palouse rolling hills. In town, you can browse books at the historic Carnegie library, catch an outdoor summer movie on campus, or take part in long-running local festivals like the Renaissance Fair, Artwalk, and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. It all adds up to a friendly, creative town where it is easy to settle in and put down roots.
