Deer Creek, AZ

Deer Creek is a Gila County census-designated place almost halfway between Tonto Basin and Payson, near Arizona State Route 87. The community sits in high-country terrain where the creek can be a defining feature after rain and nearly disappear in dry weather. The 2010 census counted 216 residents. Payson Unified School District serves the area, with Payson High School as the zoned comprehensive high school. Homes and roads sit among pine country, dry washes, and the changing elevations that mark the route toward the Mogollon Rim.

The name belongs to the water as much as the settlement. When flowing, Deer Creek passes by the village, and the North Fork leads toward the place where the remains of pioneer David Gowan were buried beside the creek near Bars Canyon. That detail gives the surrounding landscape a human marker as well as a geographic one. Deer Creek is small and spread out, with Route 87 providing the main connection between the basin, the Mogollon country, and Payson.
