Deer River, MN

Deer River is an Itasca County city of 909 people in the 2020 census, set at the meeting of U.S. Highway 2 and Minnesota Highways 6 and 46. The name comes from the Deer River that runs through the area, while the city's early growth came from logging, railroads, and mills. The Itasca Lumber Company built a superintendent's house in 1904 and ran a railroad north from Deer River to camps that supplied logs. The line became known locally as the "Gut and Liver," a nickname tied to the provisions carried to logging crews.

The timber company closed in 1920, but the house remains as a rare building link to that era. Earlier lumber operations helped establish Deer River as a trading point, and a mill built by David Joyce and former governor John S. Pillsbury handled lower-grade timber near town. Late in World War II, a prisoner-of-war logging camp operated at an old CCC camp nearby, adding another layer to the forest story. Today the highways organize the city, while the river, remaining historic buildings, and surrounding north woods keep the old logging geography close at hand.
