Deerfield, IL

Deerfield sits on Chicago's North Shore about 27 miles north of the Loop, mostly in Lake County. Commuters appreciate having two Metra stations on the Milwaukee District North Line: one right in the walkable downtown district and another along Lake Cook Road. Daily errands and local dining focus around Waukegan Road, while Lake Cook Road connects with I-94 and hosts major corporate offices, hotels, and shopping centers. This setup gives the village a peaceful residential feel while keeping job centers and regional travel close at hand.

Settlers arrived in the area during the 1830s, and the village incorporated in 1903, taking its name from Deerfield, Massachusetts, and the wild deer that once roamed the area. You can explore that pioneer era at the Deerfield Historic Village on Kipling Place. The pocket park features Lake County's oldest standing building, the 1837 Caspar Ott Log House, alongside a restored one-room schoolhouse, a carriage house, and two vintage family homes. Throughout the summer, volunteers host weekend tours, community displays, and outdoor concerts on the lawn.

Deerfield also holds a significant place in civil rights history. In 1959, developer Morris Milgram announced plans to build an integrated subdivision with homes available to both Black and white buyers. The proposal sparked intense debate, prompting local supporters to organize Deerfield Citizens for Human Rights while opponents pushed back. Village voters ultimately approved a referendum to condemn the land for public parks, setting off years of protests, court battles, and national commentary from figures like Eleanor Roosevelt, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr. The Deerfield Public Library maintains a comprehensive digital archive of photographs, timelines, and oral histories documenting the struggle.

Day-to-day community activities center around Jewett Park and the downtown corridor. The local community center stays busy with preschool classes, dance, and recreation programs, while the surrounding green space fills with residents for summer food truck nights and the annual Family Days festival. On Saturday mornings from summer through fall, a popular farmers market sets up along Park Avenue near the train station. Between the Sachs Recreation Center, two outdoor community pools, the Patty Turner Center for seniors, and a public library offering a MakerSpace and a Library of Things, newcomers will find plenty of ways to plug into town.
