About Deerfield

Two Metra stations within Deerfield connect the village with Chicago's Loop. Deerfield lies primarily in Lake County, with a smaller section in Cook County, about 27 miles north of downtown Chicago. Euro-American settlement began in 1835; residents selected the name Deerfield around 1849 or 1850, referring both to Deerfield, Massachusetts, and to deer then found in the area. The village incorporated in 1903. That history remains visible at the Deerfield Historic Village, whose five buildings date from 1837 to 1905. The Caspar Ott Log House is the oldest standing building in Lake County, and the site also includes two houses, a one-room schoolhouse, and a carriage house. Free Sunday tours and special programs were scheduled from June through September in 2026. Jewett Park Community Center is the Deerfield Park District's main program and registration hub, with a preschool, dance studio, art studio, meeting rooms, and recreation classes.

On nearby Park Avenue, the 2026 farmers market runs for 18 Saturdays from June into October with more than 25 produce and specialty-food vendors. The Park District's other indoor services are spread among the Sachs Recreation Center, which has a fitness center, pool, open gym, and tennis, pickleball, and racquetball courts, and the Patty Turner Center, which organizes classes, wellness programs, social services, and interest groups for older adults. Summer swimming takes place at Deerspring and Mitchell pools, while neighborhood parks provide additional outdoor courts. Deerfield Public Library adds a MakerSpace, seed library, meeting and study rooms, museum passes, a Library of Things, and programs for children, teenagers, and adults.
