Delhi, IA

Delhi is a Delaware County city in northeastern Iowa, sitting along the Maquoketa River near the dam and lake that carry the Delhi name. The town was founded in the early 1840s and became the county seat before that role moved elsewhere, leaving Delhi with a civic history larger than its current size. The river supplied early power and transportation, and State Highway 38 now follows the valley through town. Southwest of the city, the Delhi Dam—also called Hartwick Dam—holds back Lake Delhi, a nine-mile recreational lake with homes and boat traffic along the Maquoketa.

The dam has had its own dramatic chapter. Built between 1922 and 1929 for hydroelectric power, it failed during the July 2010 flood and was rebuilt in 2016. That episode is part of the local landscape now, alongside the river, Hartwick Bridge, old mill traces, and the school network of Maquoketa Valley Community School District. Delhi is an eastern Iowa river town where county-seat history, hydroelectric engineering, flood memory, and a lake full of summer activity all sit within a few miles.
