About Delton
Delton is a Barry County community whose name grew out of a store and post office. Adelbert Monroe bought a corner lot in 1877 and opened the first store; local histories say the name Delton came from the nickname ‘Dell’ Monroe. The post office opened in May 1877, and Delton later sat on the Chicago, Kalamazoo & Saginaw Railroad, giving the small settlement a depot and a link to Hastings. Delton is a southwest Michigan place where a shopkeeper’s name, a post office, and a railroad made a town.
