Deming, WA

Deming is a Whatcom County community on the Nooksack River, about 15 miles east of Bellingham. The place carries two histories at once: it was named for its first postmaster, George Deming, and it is home to the Nooksack Indian Tribe’s government offices and reservation center. The tribe’s reservation was established in Deming in 1970, placing tribal government directly on the local map. Deming and nearby Van Zandt also share a community radio station, KAVZ-LP. The local shorthand is river valley, Nooksack country, and a small foothills community with a tribal center at its core.
