About Des Arc
Des Arc is a Prairie County city on a broad curve of the Lower White River, one of the county's two seats of government. Its name comes from a French expression for a bow or curve, and the river has always done more than mark the edge: it carried steamboat trade, timber, farm goods, and the floods that reshaped the town in the twentieth century. Highway routes now do much of the connecting, but the White River remains the reason Des Arc sits where it does.

The Lower White River Museum State Park on Main Street keeps the river's working history close to downtown, with exhibits on settlement, transportation, hunting, fishing, timber, agriculture, pearling, and button making. City Hall, parks, utilities, restaurants, and the local paper give the river town a present-day rhythm, while the county courthouse and library pull people in from the surrounding Delta. Des Arc has the feel of a place built in conversation with water: the street grid handles the week, and the river keeps the longer memory.
