Deweyville, UT

Deweyville began at Empey's Springs in 1864, when John C. Dewey and his family settled in Box Elder County. The schoolhouse built in 1869 also served as a recreation center, an early sign of how the settlement handled community life with a small number of families. The railroad arrived in the 1870s and made Deweyville the central shipping point for the Bear River Valley; the Bothwell and Hammond canals helped bring a period of stores, boarding houses, and other businesses. After the railroad's decline, the town became primarily agricultural, with cabinetry as another local industry. Much of the area people call Deweyville lies outside the incorporated town boundary, so the name covers a wider patch of Bear River Valley than the municipal line suggests.
