About DeWitt
DeWitt is one of two county seats in Arkansas County, sitting on the Grand Prairie where rice fields take over the landscape. The town's name came out of a hat: three men each wrote down a choice when a new county seat was being planned, and "DeWitt," honoring New York governor DeWitt Clinton, won the draw. Rail arrived in the 1890s after local residents raised money to bend the line through town, helping rice milling and shipping take off. DeWitt is the Arkansas Delta in a courthouse-and-rice story.
