Dexter, NM

Dexter is a Chaves County town about two miles west of the Pecos River, with 1,074 residents in the 2020 census. New Mexico State Road 2 runs through town, connecting it northwest to Roswell and southeast to Hagerman. The river, canals, and deep wells support the Pecos Valley’s irrigated agriculture, while Dexter Consolidated Schools gives the community its own elementary, middle, and high schools. Lake Van and the Hal Bogle Sports Complex add public recreation to a town arranged around farm roads and the state highway.

Dexter was laid out in 1903 after Theodore Burr, A.E. Macy, and Milton H. Elford formed a townsite company. Macy, who came from Dexter, Iowa, received the chance to name the new town. The Pecos Valley’s agricultural economy shaped the community, and Hal Bogle donated land for the sports complex. Lake Van began as a seasonal spring-fed basin known as Horseshoe Lake; today it has fishing docks and has hosted the Milkman Triathlon each June.
