Dexter, NY

Dexter is a Jefferson County village at the end of the Seaway Trail, where the Black River meets Lake Ontario through Black River Bay. It sits in the southern part of the Town of Brownville, west of Watertown, and began as Fish Island before taking the name of Simon Newton Dexter, one of the village's early stockholders. The river made the place: mills, crossings, waterfront work, and later boating all grew from the same edge between land and water. Dexter's setting also puts it close to Sackets Harbor, the Thousand Islands, and Fort Drum.

The village's current life leans into that waterfront geography. Fishing, boating, camping, whitewater rafting, and canoeing all appear in the local recreation map, while the General Brown Central School District ties Dexter to nearby rural communities. The village is also close to Watertown International Airport and Jefferson Community College, giving a small waterfront place links to larger institutions. Dexter is a northern New York village where the Black River, Lake Ontario, a school district, and the Seaway route meet at one compact shoreline.
