Diamond, MO

Diamond lies on Diamond Grove Prairie in north-central Newton County, thirteen miles south of Carthage and about nine miles north of Neosho. The settlement began around a log house and a blacksmith shop, first using the name Center before a post office adopted Diamond in 1883. The name came from a diamond-shaped tract near the original town site. The prairie remains a central part of the setting, with native grasses, wildflowers, birds, and mima mounds preserved nearby.

Diamond is best known as the birthplace and boyhood home of George Washington Carver, who was born into slavery near Diamond Grove around 1864. The George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the farm landscape and tells the story of his early life, while Diamond Grove Prairie Conservation Area protects remnants of the tallgrass country he knew. Today the city’s own calendar includes park events, Gem City Day, parades, local businesses, and small-town services. Joplin and Neosho provide larger employment, shopping, and health care, but Diamond’s name remains tied to the prairie and to Carver’s extraordinary path from a Missouri farm community to a major agricultural scientist.
