Dickson, OK

Dickson grew around its school, not a railroad or courthouse. The eastern Carter County settlement formed around a store, then organized the Dickson Consolidated School District in 1923 after Hester Horn donated land for a twelve-grade school. The school took its name from A. E. Dickson, the Carter County superintendent, and the town followed it when Dickson incorporated in 1968. A stone school building built by the Works Progress Administration in 1940 still stands as a local marker. The quick read is a town built around education, with U.S. 177 and State Highway 199 carrying the wider Carter County traffic past it.
