Dietrich, ID

Dietrich is a Lincoln County city on the south slope of Crater Butte, where the 2020 census counted 284 residents. The extinct volcano rises from sagebrush-covered lava country, and the Dietrich Tract includes the town, farms, and desert range. State Highway 24 leads to an exit crossing Union Pacific tracks and entering the small business district.

Dietrich began as a Carey Act town in 1909, promoted by the Idaho Irrigation Company as a settlement for water from Magic Reservoir. The city incorporated in 1913, surrendered its charter, and successfully incorporated again in 1946. A 45-room hotel, model farm, railroad, and land sales aimed to bring settlers, yet early canals and sandy soil made farming difficult. Sprinkler irrigation changed that. Today Shaw Merc, the Eagle's Nest restaurant and bar, a K-12 school, and a full-block city park form the town's everyday center. Dietrich's history is an Idaho mix of railroad, irrigation, lava rock, volunteer public works, and the long effort to make desert agriculture hold.
