Dilley, TX

Dilley is a Frio County town on Interstate 35, 16 miles southwest of Pearsall, with 3,274 residents in the 2020 census. It began as Darlington beside the International-Great Northern Railroad in the 1880s, took the name Dilley from a railroad figure, and incorporated in 1912. By the early twentieth century, the town shipped cattle, vegetables, and fruit; later, peanuts, watermelons, cattle, oil exploration, and a large state prison added new layers to the local working map. The highway still sets Dilley's regional position, halfway between San Antonio and Laredo, while town routines gather around Dilley ISD, the library, and City Park. The public library runs storytime, after-school events, summer reading, Lego Lab, tabletop games, meeting space, and outreach with local groups. The city is improving the park walking trail, and its July 4 Independence Festival brings a local date to the calendar. Dilley is an I-35 town where rail-and-ranch origins now meet schools, library programs, and a city park.
