Dillsboro, NC

Tucked along the Tuckasegee River in western North Carolina, Dillsboro is a tiny mountain village with around 200 full-time residents. It grew up around the railroad in the late 1800s, and that vintage depot feel is still everywhere you look. The historic downtown stretches across a few walkable blocks filled with local pottery studios, small cafes, and craft shops, including several housed inside the town founder’s original 19th-century farmhouse overlooking the water.

Living here means having outdoor recreation right in your backyard. The free-flowing Tuckasegee is a favorite spot for fly fishing and paddling, while the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad still runs historic train excursions right through the center of town. Because Dillsboro sits right next door to Sylva, residents get the quiet charm of a small river community while staying just minutes from grocery stores, local breweries, and everyday amenities.
