Divernon, IL

Divernon is a Sangamon County village in the Springfield metro, with 1,139 residents in the 2020 census. Its post office dates to 1887, and the name comes from Di Vernon, a character in Walter Scott's Rob Roy. That literary origin is an unusually specific bit of local shorthand: a village name that points back to a nineteenth-century novel while the town itself grew into the Springfield area's southern edge.

School lines have shifted over time. Divernon once had its own community unit district; after that district was dissolved, most of its territory joined Auburn Community Unit School District 10. Students now follow the Auburn district, with Auburn High School on North Seventh Street. The village's older memories have their own home in the 1975 Diamond Jubilee Memory Book, which collected the first 75 years of local history. Divernon is a compact place with a post office-era beginning, a name borrowed from fiction, and a school connection that now runs north toward Auburn and the wider Springfield area.
