Dividing Creek, NJ

Dividing Creek is an unincorporated census-designated place in Downe Township, Cumberland County, in southern New Jersey. The 2020 census counted 345 residents. County Route 553 runs through the village, with the southern end of County Route 555 here and Millville about 9.7 miles northeast. A post office gives the place a formal address, but its deeper map is tidal: creeks, marshes, Delaware Bay shore, fishing, boating, and preserved open land.

Dividing Creek Union Hall is considered one of South Jersey’s oldest public buildings of its kind, outside church and municipal use. The Dividing Creek Civic Club bought it in 1965, and the historical society now keeps it as a place for local history and gatherings. Downe Township School District serves local children, while the township’s weakfish tradition and coastal heritage trail tie the village to Newport, Money Island, Gandy’s Beach, and Fortescue. Dividing Creek is a Pine Barrens-edge water community where a county road, post office, old hall, school, and tidal creeks share one narrow South Jersey map.
