Dixmoor, IL

Dixmoor is a Cook County village just south of Chicago, laid out in the same narrow corridor as the Little Calumet River, Interstate 57, and the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. It was incorporated in 1922 as Specialville, honoring landowner Charles Special, then took the name Dixmoor in 1929, a change associated with the nearby Dixie Highway. The village began as a residential place for people working in Blue Island and Harvey, with metal fabrication and other industry shaping the local economy. That mix still tells the story: a small south suburban municipality crossed by major routes, bordered by older neighbors, and built around work beyond its own streets.
