Doerun, GA

Doerun grew from the farm country of northwest Colquitt County after Reverend W. W. Williams helped establish the settlement. The name came from hunters’ description of a stream running through yellow pines, and a post office opened in 1895. The Georgia Northern Railroad arrived in 1898, bringing a depot, cotton gins, warehouses, telegraph service, a bank, and the commercial activity of an agricultural hub. The city was chartered around 1900.

Doerun Elementary School serves younger students, while the city provides a surprisingly full municipal base for a town its size: water, electricity, natural gas, sewer service, garbage arrangements, police, and fire protection. The Georgia Florida Railway still runs through town with sidings available for industrial and agricultural use. Moultrie handles larger shopping, medical care, and county business, but Doerun keeps its own City Hall, school, utilities, and local businesses close together. The old doe-run name still fits a place where pine woods, farm work, rail freight, and town services meet.
