Dollar Bay, MI

Dollar Bay is a Houghton County census-designated place on Portage Lake in Osceola Township, along M-26 between Hancock and Houghton. The 2020 census counted 1,061 residents. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools has served the area since 1914 and still brings PreK–12 students, families, and activities into one building. Township water service, the Dollar Bay ice rink, Veterans Park, Sandy Bottom Beach, and the small roads around the canal make the shoreline and school the practical center of the community.

Dollar Bay grew in the 1880s around copper processing, when the Dollar Bay Land and Improvement Company and the Tamarack and Osceola mining interests built houses, a rolling mill, wire works, and a smelter along the water. The mines and factories are mostly history, but their industrial traces remain beside the Portage Canal. Gooseneck Park sits on the north side of M-26, and Portage Lake still shapes boating, fishing, winter weather, and the route to work. Dollar Bay is a Copper Country settlement where school, township services, and old industrial shoreline share the same few miles.
