Donald, OR

Donald is a quiet community of about 1,000 residents tucked into the northern Willamette Valley, sitting almost exactly halfway between Portland and Salem. It originally sprang up in the early 1900s as a stop along the Oregon Electric Railway, and you can still spot remnants of that heritage today around the old brick substation. Families living here are served by the North Marion School District, and the location makes it an easy home base for commuters who want a slower, rural pace within reach of both metro areas.

Despite its small footprint, Donald has a unique claim to fame: Oregon’s first public concrete skate park. Local kids pitched the idea directly to the mayor back in the late 1990s, and the resulting bowl still draws skaters from all across the region. Everyday life revolves around a few familiar spots like the Donald Tavern and Center Market, giving the town a tight-knit, welcoming feel where neighbors know each other and open farmland is always right down the road.
