About Doniphan

Doniphan sits where the old Nebraska City-Fort Kearny trail and the railroad story meet. William J. Burger platted the village in 1879 as a midway stop between Hastings and Grand Island, and the St. Joseph and Grand Island Railroad soon gave the farm community a reason to grow. The name honors Colonel John Doniphan, a railroad attorney. Today the village's working map still reaches beyond Main Street: irrigated and dryland farms, livestock feeding, trucking, and the Doniphan-Trumbull school all tie it to the surrounding Hall County country. Since 1948, the Nebraska Trapshooting Association's home grounds have added another annual gathering to the town's calendar.
