Dorothy, NJ

Dorothy is a 2020 census-designated place of 1,057 people in Weymouth Township, in western Atlantic County. It is part of the South Jersey Pine Barrens, with the township school district and postal service providing the basic civic frame. Dorothy also belongs to southern New Jersey’s agricultural history: Jewish immigrants, including Holocaust survivors after World War II, built poultry farms in and around this part of the region. That history is easy to miss if you look only at the small population, yet it gives Dorothy a distinct farm-and-forest story. On the ground today, the 331-acre Dorothy Preserve gives the community its strongest physical landmark.

Oak-pine forest, Stephens Creek, Atlantic white cedar, and Pine Barrens savanna sit inside a larger forest corridor running toward Wharton State Forest; the preserve is used for hiking and birding. The Dorothy Volunteer Fire Company, serving the area since 1935, adds a local civic piece, with stations in Dorothy and nearby Belcoville and a continuing call for volunteer and junior members. The local map is Pine Barrens forest, old poultry country, and a firehouse that still runs on neighbors showing up.
