About Dortches
Dortches is a Nash County town named for the Dortch family, whose local history is preserved in the Dortch House. The Federal-style house, built around 1803, was placed on the National Register in 1972, giving the town a landmark from the county's early plantation era. Dortches lies beside Rocky Mount, with town hall and the surrounding roads tied closely to the larger city. The town's recent history includes the EF3 tornado that struck on July 19, 2023, damaging homes and hitting the Pfizer facility near town. Recovery work brought food distribution and other aid through Dortches Town Hall. An old house, a modern industrial site, and a hard recent storm give this small Nash County town a map with very different chapters.
