Double Horn, TX

Double Horn is a Burnet County city with a name that sounds like a tall tale, and the local story does not disappoint. The original settlement formed near the headwaters of Double Horn Creek in 1855, after a pioneer found two bucks with their antlers locked together. A post office operated from 1857 to 1911, and the community once had a school, cotton gin, and two churches. Until 2019, Double Horn was part of the broader Spicewood community; then residents incorporated as a city in their own right.

Today, Double Horn sits in the Hill Country just north of State Highway 71, about four miles west-northwest of Spicewood and five miles southeast of Marble Falls. The city is small and residential, with public schools served by Marble Falls Independent School District and the nearest major urban connection in Austin, roughly 26 miles away. Shovel Mountain appears on nearby topographic maps, adding another local landmark to the story. Double Horn’s character is recent in municipal terms but old in place-name terms: nineteenth-century creek history, a 2019 incorporation, and a modern Hill Country community still sorting out its own city government.
