About Dougherty
Dougherty is a town in Murray County, Oklahoma, United States. The 2020 census counted 199 residents. The community was first known as "Henderson Flat". On September 3, 1887, a post office was established here and called Dougherty, Indian Territory. That mix gives Dougherty a clear local shape within Oklahoma, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. Dougherty is in southern Murray County, about 10 miles by road south-southeast of Davis and 15 miles southwest of Sulphur, the Murray county seat. Dougherty is in the valley of the Washita River, just upstream of the mouth of its tributary, Rock Creek, the outflow from the Lake of the Arbuckles 3 miles to the northeast.
