About Dover
The Green remains a working public space at the center of Delaware's capital rather than only a preserved colonial square. Laid out in 1717, it is surrounded by a historic district with 79 contributing buildings and forms part of First State Heritage Park, a collection of state and city sites linked as a park without fixed boundaries. The Old State House offers free museum admission and guided tours, while public readings, films, and commemorations continue to use the Green. Dover has served as the state capital since 1777 and is also Kent County's seat. Government is only one source of weekday activity: Delaware State University's main campus sits north of downtown, and the university acquired the former Wesley College campus in 2021 and renamed it DSU Downtown, retaining classes, residence halls, recreation, and student services in the city center. Residents have substantial public space beyond the civic district. Dover maintains 28 parks, including 182-acre Silver Lake Park with walking paths, fishing, a boat ramp, playgrounds, and pavilions.

The 71-acre Schutte Park concentrates multipurpose fields, lighted softball diamonds, a cross-country and walking course, and the Pitts Recreation Center. Dover Public Library opens seven days a week and supplements its collections with a seed library, teen space, passport service, a story walk, and recurring programs. DART's Dover Transit Center is served by local routes and intercounty buses, making it the city's principal transfer point for riders without a car. Two large institutions change the calendar at opposite ends of town: Dover Motor Speedway schedules major race weekends, while the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base displays roughly two dozen aircraft in and around a restored World War II hangar. State offices, two university settings, neighborhood parks, transit, racing, and military aviation all contribute distinct rhythms to present-day Dover.
