Downingtown is a historic borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, located thirty-three miles west of Philadelphia. First settled in 1716 and originally named Milltown due to its numerous early paper and grist mills along the Brandywine Creek, the community of approximately 8,300 preserves its heritage in the East Lancaster Avenue Historic District. Public education for local families is administered by the highly rated Downingtown Area School District.
