About Draper

Draper is a Jones County town that grew from a 1906 railroad lot sale on the Milwaukee Road. The South Dakota State Historical Society records its post office date as July 6, 1906 and lists Mussman as an earlier name. Draper was one of three West River communities, along with Murdo and Vivian, formed on the same line, where farmers used the railroad to connect their products and purchases to larger markets. Its present-day setting remains a Jones County prairie town whose layout began as a transportation project.
