Draper sits right at the Point of the Mountain, perfectly positioned between Salt Lake City and Utah Valley. If you commute, it is about as convenient as it gets, with Interstate 15 running straight through town and direct access to both FrontRunner commuter rail and TRAX light rail. Over the past couple of decades, the west side has grown into a major commercial hub, anchoring part of Utah's tech-heavy Silicon Slopes with employers like eBay and 1-800 Contacts. Head east, though, and the scenery shifts quickly as residential neighborhoods climb into the quiet foothills of the Wasatch Range.
For much of the twentieth century, Draper was a quiet farming community known for its poultry co-ops and open pastures. While modern subdivisions, restaurants, and shopping centers have replaced the old farmland, the town has kept a spacious, family-friendly feel. Housing options vary widely, from newer townhomes and apartments near the transit lines to custom homes perched along the mountain benches with incredible valley views. It is a popular landing spot for newcomers who want strong schools, safe neighborhoods, and quick access to both Salt Lake City and Provo.
One of the most exciting long-term projects in the state is unfolding on the city's west side. The 600-acre site formerly occupied by the Utah State Prison is being rebuilt as The Point, a massive, master-planned community designed for walkability, tech innovation, and sustainable living. As development rolls out, it will bring fresh housing, lively dining and shopping plazas, parks, and regional trail networks that connect the Jordan River to the mountains. It is shaping up to be a vibrant focal point for the south end of the valley.
If you love spending time outside, Draper is hard to beat. The city maintains thousands of acres of open space and more than 150 miles of trails, making Corner Canyon a premier destination for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running. Up on the bench, the world-famous Point of the Mountain Flight Park gives hang gliders and paragliders one of the best launch sites in the country. Down in town, community traditions like the annual Draper Days festival in July bring everyone out for rodeos, parades, and park concerts, giving the city a genuine neighborhood charm.
