About Duane Lake

Duane Lake is a Schenectady County census-designated place in the town of Duanesburg, where the 2020 census counted 329 residents. The CDP takes its name from the small man-made lake in southern Duanesburg, a predominantly agrarian town west of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy area. Duane Lake itself covers about 117 acres, giving the community a clear geographic center.

Duanesburg was named for Judge James Duane, an early landowner who imagined a much larger future for the town. Roads and lake rules have been part of local administration for decades; the town took over a private road around Duane Lake in 1955 and adopted a motor-vehicle ordinance for the lake in 1996. Large farmsteads, hamlets, and historic byways surround the water. From the lake, local roads run through a landscape of barns, woods, and scattered homes, with Schenectady and the Capital Region beyond the rural edges of Duanesburg. Duane Lake is a small New York community where a reservoir, rural roads, and an old landowner’s name still organize the map.
