Dulce, NM

Dulce is the capital and largest community of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, sitting along U.S. 64 in northern New Mexico just south of the Colorado border. The town took its name from Agua Dulce, the freshwater springs that drew early ranchers to the area. Today, most daily activity centers around tribal government offices, community services, and the local schools, giving the town a quiet, close-knit rhythm shaped by Jicarilla culture.

Families in the area are served by Dulce Independent Schools, which covers kindergarten through twelfth grade on a central campus in town. Beyond the residential streets, the landscape climbs from sagebrush valleys into pine-covered mesas, canyons, and mountain lakes popular for fishing and wildlife watching.
