Duluth, MN

Duluth sits at the westernmost tip of Lake Superior, sharing a massive natural harbor with Superior, Wisconsin to form the Twin Ports. As the farthest inland freshwater port in North America, the city hosts ocean-going vessels and massive thousand-foot lakers that travel thousands of miles through the Great Lakes. The city is built directly into a steep hillside, meaning almost every neighborhood enjoys sweeping views of the water. Canal Park serves as the central waterfront hub, filled with local restaurants, taprooms, and the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. Hovering over it all is the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge. The bridge connects the mainland to Park Point, a long sandy strip of residential beach cottages. Whenever a giant freighter glides through the canal, the bridge lifts to let it pass, turning a routine commute into a classic Duluth spectator event.

Lake Superior shapes the community well beyond shipping. Higher education thrives on the hillside, led by the University of Minnesota Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica, giving the city a steady collegiate energy. The university leads major freshwater research with its own vessel out on the lake, while down by the docks, the Great Lakes Aquarium showcases the diverse ecology of the inland sea. Together with major regional healthcare systems, these institutions create a solid economic base centered around conservation, medicine, and marine science.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the city is hard to beat. The paved Lakewalk spans miles along the shoreline from Bayfront toward Brighton Beach, giving runners and cyclists front-row seats to the open water. Hundreds of miles of natural paths, including a long stretch of the Superior Hiking Trail, weave directly through city parks and rocky ridgelines. When the seasons shift, locals head to Spirit Mountain for skiing and mountain biking, or gather for live summer concerts and community markets across neighborhoods like the bustling Lincoln Park Craft District.
