Saint Paul sits perched above the Mississippi River, built right into the steep bluffs that once marked the end of the line for northern steamboats. Long before European settlers arrived, the Dakota people called these white sandstone cliffs Imniza-Ska. The town got its start in the 1840s as a trading post nicknamed Pig's Eye, named after a colorful local trader, before adopting the name Saint Paul from a small log chapel on the bluff.
