Duncan, AZ

Duncan is a Greenlee County town in the Gila River valley, four miles west of the Arizona-New Mexico line. The town's limits cross the river, though downtown and most of the built-up area sit on the south bank. Cottonwoods shelter farms and ranches along the level ground, with the mountains and desert of southeastern Arizona rising beyond them. The site developed in the 1870s as Purdy, a way station on the ore-haul route between Clifton and Silver City, before taking the Duncan name.

U.S. 70 runs through downtown, carrying traffic west toward Safford and southeast toward Lordsburg and I-10. Arizona 75 heads north to Clifton, keeping Duncan tied to Greenlee County's mining country as well as the agricultural valley. The town's local shape comes from that overlap: farms and livestock occupy the river corridor, the main street handles through traffic, and older houses sit beneath cottonwoods. Duncan is a small Arizona town where a Gila crossing, a freight route, and a farming valley still organize the map.
