Its center is near the junction of South Carolina highways 290 and 292, while its municipal boundaries reach north beyond U.S. Route 29 and south to Interstate 85. The Middle Tyger River crosses the area. A settlement first known as New Hope developed around an early post office, and railroad plans in the 1850s were interrupted by the Civil War.
