Dupo, IL

Dupo is a St. Clair County village in the American Bottom, just across the Mississippi floodplain from the Cahokia area. The 2020 census counted 3,996 residents. The settlement began around 1750 as Prairie du Pont, a French village tied to Cahokia and the road toward Kaskaskia. Its modern name is a shortened form of Prairie du Pont, and the village incorporated in 1907. Water and routes still make the place easy to picture. The river is close enough to shape the roads and the errands.

Prairie du Pont Creek marks the old crossing, while the broader floodplain runs toward the Mississippi and the St. Louis metro. Dupo Community Unit School District keeps the local map centered on neighborhood schools, and the village's position near the regional road network gives it a daily connection to the river communities and the Illinois side of the metro. Dupo is an old French-settlement name in a modern river corridor, with Cahokia close by and the floodplain under every trip.
