About Dupont City
Dupont City is an unincorporated community in Kanawha County, West Virginia, about five miles from Charleston. It lies near the Kanawha River communities of Rand, Malden, and Lower Belle, in a valley where salt production and chemical manufacturing shaped the surrounding map. The 2020 census counted 602 residents in the Dupont City census-designated place. The community's elevation is about 614 feet, and nearby Lower Belle gives the map another valley reference.
DuPont High School opened in 1962 and stayed in town until 1999. The Panthers played there before the school consolidated with nearby East Bank High School to form Riverside High School. The school building opened after construction in 1961, and its first teams carried the Panthers name. Former students included NFL linebacker Bobbie Howard, NFL wide receiver Randy Moss, and NBA guard Jason Williams. Dupont City's small valley geography is tied to its neighboring communities, its school years, and the broader Kanawha industrial corridor. The school name still gives the community a familiar point of reference.
