Eagle Butte, SD

Eagle Butte is a city in Dewey and Ziebach counties, where the 2020 census counted 1,258 residents. The city is the tribal headquarters of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and sits at the heart of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. North Eagle Butte borders the city as a separate census-designated place, making the local map a mix of city and reservation communities.

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School is jointly operated by the Eagle Butte School District and the Bureau of Indian Education, with the school carrying the Cheyenne River Lakota Nation's educational history forward. Presentation College also maintained a branch in town until 2014. Roads radiate from Eagle Butte across the reservation, linking government, school, tribal, and family networks across a broad South Dakota landscape.
