Eagle River, WI

Eagle River is Vilas County's city and county seat, with 1,628 people at the 2020 census. The city grew where the Wisconsin River and the Chain O' Lakes meet, and its name came from the eagles nesting along the river. It became a town in 1885, the county seat in 1893, and a city in 1937. Those dates track the shift from Northwoods settlement to a county hub built around lakes, roads, and seasonal visitors.

The city's big local claim is the World Championship Snowmobile Derby, first run in 1964 on Dollar Lake before moving to a permanent site along Highway 45. The Eagle River area now leans into the lake country, with 28 connected lakes, boat launches, fishing, resorts, cabins, the Snowmobile Hall of Fame, and the Three Eagle Trail. County offices, schools, hockey, and the business district keep the city functioning after vacation traffic thins.
