Earle, AR

Earle grew from two neighboring settlements in western Crittenden County, with Norvell taking shape in 1872 around physician James Throgmorton. Timber, rail connections, and the Tyronza River helped turn the area into a working town, and the Iron Mountain railroad became part of the route that moved people and goods. The old Earle High School, built in 1919 in a Mission/Spanish Revival style, carries that period into the present. Its three-story brick form is one of the clearest reminders of the town’s years of expansion.

U.S. 64 now passes through the north side, leaving downtown streets to local traffic, while Earle School District continues to serve local students from early childhood through high school. The district’s history reaches beyond a single campus: earlier school buildings and WPA work once spread across several blocks as enrollment grew. Around town, the practical geography is flat and agricultural, with Memphis within the wider regional orbit and the Delta close at hand. Earle’s story is written in timber routes, school grounds, and the brick buildings that survived the changes in the local economy.
