Earlsboro, OK

Earlsboro is a Pottawatomie County town in central Oklahoma, where the 2020 census counted 594 residents. The settlement began in 1891 as Earlsborough, when the Choctaw Coal and Railway built a line west from the Seminole Nation into Oklahoma Territory. The railroad arrived before statehood, and the town grew around tracks, coal, and the new territorial border. The original town stood about a half mile inside Oklahoma Territory, a small distance that mattered before statehood.

Earlsboro's early business district included three saloons, a sign of how alcohol sales supported the local economy around the rail line before Oklahoma statehood. Today most students attend Earlsboro Public Schools, with portions of town in the Strother and South Rock Creek districts. The name has shortened, the railroad era has passed, and the map is more rural than industrial now, yet the original pattern remains visible: a community made by a line of track crossing a young territory, then held together by schools and local roads.
