About East Dubuque
East Dubuque is a Jo Daviess County city pressed against the Mississippi River, with Dubuque, Iowa, across the water and the Illinois–Wisconsin line running north along the river. It was first called Dunleith and was platted in 1853; the East Dubuque name came from being on the eastern side of Dubuque. The Julien Dubuque Bridge ties the two cities together, while Illinois Route 35 carries traffic toward Wisconsin. East Dubuque sits in the Driftless Area, so the river crossing and the rolling terrain belong in the same local picture. It is an Illinois river city whose identity is built around being just across the Mississippi from its namesake.
