East Duke, OK

Known simply as Duke to locals, this quiet southwest Oklahoma town sits about fifteen minutes west of Altus along U.S. Highway 62. It got its start in the 1890s as a trading post surrounded by open prairie, cotton fields, and cattle ranches. Over the decades, Duke grew into a tight-knit farming hub where neighbors know each other by name, offering a peaceful, slow-paced lifestyle with an easy commute to jobs and amenities in Altus.

The community has a quirky history, having once been split into "Old Town" and "New Town" when rival settlements competed for the coming railroad with free lots and separate schools just a short walk apart. The two sides eventually merged, and today Duke is a relaxed Jackson County town defined by big open skies, a dedicated local school district, and deep roots in the surrounding farm country.
