East Hope, ID

East Hope is a Bonner County city on the eastern shore of Lake Pend Oreille, beside the older community of Hope in Idaho’s northern panhandle. The 2020 census counted 229 residents. The two communities grew with the Northern Pacific Railroad after 1882, when the lake shore became a route for rail workers, steamboats, timber, and supplies. East Hope’s small city footprint sits between the water and the hills, with Sandpoint about twelve miles west and the lake opening toward the Idaho mountains.

Hope was named for a Northern Pacific veterinarian and was platted in 1888; East Hope developed as the neighboring settlement as the railroad corridor matured. Today the shoreline governs the local map: boat launches, marinas, docks, and road connections matter as much as the city streets. East Hope’s zoning history also treats the Lake Pend Oreille shoreline as a central civic concern. Residents share the broader Hope-area services and recreation network, including Sam Owen Campground and the lake’s boat access. East Hope is a tiny lake city shaped by railroad history, waterfront work, and the larger landscape around Pend Oreille.
