East Orange, NJ

East Orange has a rich history and a strong sense of community. Sitting right beside Newark and just a quick train ride from Manhattan, this four-square-mile city evolved from a quiet Victorian suburb into a proud hub for Black middle-class families in the mid-twentieth century. Today, daily activity clusters around two main avenues. Main Street is where you will find City Hall, historic architecture, and two busy train stations, while Central Avenue offers a lively commercial stretch filled with local eateries, grocery spots, and neighborhood businesses.

Commuters love the transit setup here. Both the East Orange and Brick Church stations sit along NJ Transit's Morris & Essex lines, giving residents direct or easy rides straight into Midtown Manhattan, Hoboken, and downtown Newark. The area around Brick Church station is seeing a major wave of fresh investment, bringing modern apartment buildings, walkable retail, and a massive new ShopRite supermarket that gives the neighborhood a convenient everyday grocery hub.

Beyond commuting into the city, East Orange has its own major employment and healthcare anchors. The sprawling East Orange VA Medical Center sits on a leafy campus along Tremont Avenue, bringing thousands of medical professionals, researchers, and veterans to the neighborhood every day. Around the hospital and throughout the surrounding residential streets, you will find quiet blocks lined with classic brick apartment buildings, turn-of-the-century colonials, and welcoming front porches.

The city also has a vibrant cultural side rooted in the arts. The Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts anchors local creative talent, hosting student performances, concerts, and neighborhood gatherings in its modern theater. Throughout the year, free community events like Jazz at the Plaza and Soul in the City bring neighbors together to enjoy live music outdoors.
